What is the meaning of Tahajjud?

Tahajjud according to the use of language means waking up at night or leaving sleep.

Therefore, the Sunat Tahajjud Prayer (صلاة سنة التهجد) is a sunat prayer performed at night after waking up from sleep. Therefore, the prayer is also called Qiyamullail.

The Tahajjud prayer should be a common practice of every Muslim in order to obtain the pleasure and forgiveness of Allah SWT.

This is because through Tahajjud ki Namaz, an obedient can pray and complain directly to Allah SWT in an atmosphere. That is quite quiet and silent when other people are sleeping.

This atmosphere presents a sense of smallness, realization and weakness of self as a obedient of Allah which in fact can not escape from dependence on Allah alone.

Rasulullah SAW and his companions never left Tahajud during their lives.

In a hadith, it is narrated that Rasulullah SAW was so punctual to pray Tahajjud prayer. Until his feet were swollen due to standing in prayer for a long time.

Abu Hurairah RA narrated that:

Rasulullah SAW used to perform prayers until both of his legs were swollen (due to standing for a long time). Someone once asked the Prophet: Why do you do such a thing when it is written that God has forgiven all your past and future sins. He replied “Can I not be a obedient to him, who is very grateful to me”

Hadith narrated by al-Tirmizi

Best Time for Tahajjud Namaz

When is the best time to perform the Tahajud Ki Namaz?

Tahajud namaz is performed as soon as one wakes up from sleep on night.

It is best to perform this prayer at the end of the night, that is, before dawn.

However, the Afdal time to pray tahajjud prayer is on the last 1/3 of the night. That is around 3 or 4 am – that is after sleeping at midnight and this prayer time continues until the time of Fajar.

Is it permissible to perform tahajjud prayers during Sehri?

The answer is, YES of course you can.

If a person gets up for Sehri. Then it is best to perform the tahajjud Ki Namaz first, then eat the Sehri.

Therefore, as long as it has not yet dawn. Then there is still time to perform the sunat tahajid Namaz.

Is it obligatory to sleep first before Tahajjud Prayer?

The scholars differed on this matter.

According to Imam al-Qurtubi, tahajjud means waking up from sleep. So the word tahajjud was used as the name for the prayer, namely the Sunat Tahajud Prayer.

In a hadith narrated by al-Hajjaj bin Umar , a companion of the Prophet SAW that he said:

Did any of you think that when he was awake all night. He was considered tahajjud. The tahajjud is to establish prayer after sleep, then to establish prayer after sleep, then to establish prayer after sleep. That is how Rasulullah SAW established the night prayer “

Therefore, if a person deliberately wakes up at night without sleeping. And then he performs the Tahajjud Prayer at the end of the night, then he STILL gets a reward for the prayer he performs. In this case, sleep is not a condition for tahajjud namaz.

However, what is BEST and MOST AFDAL is to sleep first. And then get up at the end of the night to perform the Tahajjud Ki Namaz. Because it fulfills the meaning and purpose of the prayer itself. That is the prayer after waking up from sleep and following the sunnah of the Prophet SAW in doing it.

It also describes the seriousness and determination of a person to wake up at the end of the night to fight his laziness and drowsiness.

Tahajjud Ki Namaz Ka Tarika

When waking up after sleeping in the middle of the night, take ablution.

Dua After Tahajjud Ki Namaz

Translation

O Allah, to You be all praise, You are the upholder of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them.

You are the King of heaven and earth. Praise be to You, the giver of light of the heavens and the earth.

Praise be to You, You are the truth, Your promise is true, Your meeting is true, Your word is true, heaven is true, hell is true, the prophets are true, Prophet Muhammad SAW is true, and the Day of Judgment is true.

O Allah, to You I submit, to You I return, to You I long, and to You I judge. Forgive me for the mistakes I have made and the previous ones, both that I hid and that were revealed. You are the first God and the last God.

There is no God but You. There is no power and strength except with (the power of) Allah.

How many Rakat in Tahajjud Prayer?

There is no specific information regarding the sunat tahajjud prayers in detail.

The number of rakat is not limited, but at least two rakats with one salam for every two rakats.

The sunat tahajjud prayers can be performed for two, four, six, eight  and twelve rakats. However, it can be done as much as you can.

The Prophet SAW said in a hadith:

Pray from part of the night even if it is four rakats, pray even if it is two rakat. None of the family members are known to whom they always pray at night except to be called to them by a caller: O members of this family! Get up for night prayers. ”
