Background Surah Kafirun

Surah Al-Kafirun (سورة الكافرون) is the 109th surah in the Quran. This surah contains 6 verses and belongs to surah Makkiyah .The name Al Kaafiruun (the disbelievers) is taken from the word that appears in the first verse of this letter.

At the time of the spread of Islam in Mecca, the Quraish who opposed the Prophet SAW were relentlessly looking for ways to stop the Islamic threat to the beliefs of their ancestors. In one of these efforts they tried to propose a compromise to the Prophet SAW where they offered: if the Prophet wants to worship their God, then they will also worship God as the concept of Islam. Then this surah was revealed to answer that.

It was narrated by ath-Thabrani and Ibn Abi Hatim, who sourced from Ibn Abbas that the Quraish sought to influence the Prophet Muhammad SAW. By offering him wealth so that he would become the richest man in Mecca. They also offered him to marry any woman he wanted.

They conveyed the offer to him, saying, “This is what we have prepared for you. O Muhammad, provided you do not curse our god and disparage him, or worship our gods for a year. Then Prophet Muhammad SAW replied, “I will wait for a revelation from my Allah.

This surah Kafirun was revealed with respect to the event as an order to reject the offer of the infidels. And surah az-Zummar verse 64 was revealed: Say: “Then do you ask me to worship other than Allah, O you who do not know?” as an order to reject the call of fools who worship idols.

Narrated by Abdurrazzaq who originated from Wahb; and it was narrated by Ibn Mundzir who came from Juraij that the disbelievers of Quraysh said to the Prophet.

Benefits of Surah Al Kafirun

The Surah Al Kafirun teaches us to be tolerant in practicing the teachings of their respective religions.

The Qur’an commands us to respect the followers of other religions. Coinciding with the last part of this verse which means ‘For you is your religion and for me is my religion’.

While it should be respectful, there is no tolerance in matters related to faith and worship. Respect for other religions and beliefs does not mean weakening or affirming their truth.
